About Arrayanes Forest National Park

Arrayanes Forest National Park, located in the Argentine Patagonia within Neuquén Province, is celebrated for its extraordinary forests of Arrayán trees (Luma apiculata), which feature smooth cinnamon-colored bark that gives the park an ethereal and distinctive look. The park encompasses a modest area of about 1,842 acres (746 hectares) on the Quetrihué Peninsula, projecting into the pristine waters of Lake Nahuel Huapi. This protected area lies near the city of San Carlos de Bariloche and is accessible primarily by boat or hiking, preserving its tranquil and relatively untouched atmosphere. Established in 1971, the park was set aside to safeguard the last remaining natural stands of the Arrayán tree, which can live up to 600 years and grow to heights of 15-20 meters. Beyond the striking forests, visitors can enjoy stunning views of Lake Nahuel Huapi and the surrounding Andes mountains, making it a popular destination for nature photography, bird watching, and peaceful exploration. Hiking trails, such as the famed Arrayanes Trail and the longer Puerto Bonito trail, allow visitors to traverse diverse landscapes—from dense forest to rocky lakeshore. The park also supports a variety of wildlife including native birds like the Southern Andean deer (Huemul), woodpeckers, and small mammals. With its remarkable botanical and scenic value, Arrayanes Forest National Park combines ecological significance with accessible outdoor recreation, attracting both local visitors and international tourists seeking the magical Patagonian wilderness experience.
